Near-Earth asteroids circling one thousand dangerous
NASA said the latest estimates of the number of potentially hazardous asteroids. These results were obtained by review of NEOWISE, carried out in an under space mission WISE. Potentially dangerous asteroids, abbreviated PHA,"Potentially Hazardous Asteroids" is part of a larger group of so-called asteroid close Earth(NEA - near-Earth asteroids), that is, those which run near the orbit of the planet. PHA to the next orbit, away from the Earth to eight million kilometers, and are large enough that survive passage through Earth's atmosphere, causing damage at the level from local to global (depending on the size of the object). One element of the space mission was to search for asteroids WISE. This fragment was named NEOWISE mission. In this framework, the researchers studied 107 asteroids to estimate the total population of such objects results indicate that there may be almost 4,700 asteroids PHAs larger than 100 meters in diameter. The estimates have an accuracy of plus / minus 1500 objects. So far found only 20 to 30 percent of such facilities. NASA scientists also developed a list of countries in greatest danger. Took into account not only the area it takes a country, but also the amount of damage they can inflict on the asteroid. The top ten were China, Indonesia, India, Japan, United States, Philippines, Italy, Great Britain, Brazil and Nigeria. Estimates of project NEOWISE are consistent with previous estimates of the number of potentially hazardous asteroids. Space Telescope WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) has twice reviewed the entire sky in infrared light, before in 2011, went into hibernation. Cataloged hundreds of millions of objects - from galaxies, and asteroids. The project NEOWISE photographed about 600 near-Earth asteroid (NEA), of which 135 were new discoveries. And everything must be check before December 2012 to be on the safe side..
