The map is drawn on parchment made of camel skin, inscribed with Arabic characters in the Ottoman language and in one of theinscriptions on the Muharram in the Islamic year 919 (equivalent to 1513 in the Christian Era) dates. The book by Piri Reis, fromwhich this map was (Bahriyeh), is obtained in two editors from the years 1521 and 1524.
It shows in addition to long-known regions of western Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa and West Africa's coastline, and North and South America. These shorelines vote in Europe, Africa and South America in a number of points in line with the actual circumstances, but at the same time contain inaccuracies and errors. Striking country points (bays, estuaries, islands) are - probably as a navigational aid - greatly enlarged. At the upper left part of the map can be worked into the country points to the real map fragments of the Gulf of Mexico are not clearly assigned. The lower left part of the map shows South America to the prevailing opinion, some authors say it but also the northern coast of South America or South America to see with Antarctica.
