Lunik-Missions of the Sowjets! Were they more successful than we thought?
Lunik Lunik 1 to 3 were based on the name of the first satellite, Sputnik, which means three Soviet lunar probes in the first series.
It should be noted that the probes were only in Western sources called "Lunik". In the official Soviet media, they were designated as follows:
Lunik 1 as "Cosmic Rocket"
Lunik 2 as a "Soviet Cosmic Rocket 2"
Lunik 3 to as "Automatic Interplanetary Station"
Lunik 1 (January 1959) swung to a flyby of the moon erroneously entered into a solar orbit, but deliveredradiation measurement useful for the analysis of the terrestrial radiation belt and confirmed the existence of the solar wind.
Lunik 2 was the first probe, which on 13 September 1959, the first ever artificial missiles, targeted to hit the lunar surface.
Lunik 3 (October 1959) photographed for the first time the side of the moon.
The following were the second series of lunar probes Luna (russ: Moon) called.
Interesting in this context are also some more moon missions of the Soviet Union, all of which failed:
Lunik 1958a on 23 September 1958 - destroyed by rocket explosion
Lunik 1958b on 12 October 1958 - destroyed by rocket explosion
Lunik 1958C on 4 December 1958 - destroyed by rocket explosion
Lunik 1959a on 18 June 1959 - destroyed by rocket explosion
Lunik 1960A on 15 April 1960 - remains in Earth orbit
Lunik 1958b on 19 April 1960 - destroyed by rocket explosion
All names are fictitious catalog titles, admitted these failures were never in the USSR. By listing a clearerpicture emerges from the first Soviet lunar program. Only a third of the probes actually reached the moon.
Were provided for each Lunik 1958-59 premiums on the lunar surface as Lunik 2, for the two Lunikmissions in 1960, the third orbit as Lunik
