The ' January 8th of 1958 the school ship Almirante Saldanha of the Brazilian Navy sailed from Rio de Janeiro to conduct on the island of Trindade, a group of scientists who were to carry out surveys. When the ship had already arrived at their destination, January 16 at 12.00 a crew member spotted a UFO and called the attention of other people who were on the deck of the ship. The UFO was initially a dark dot, but approaching the ship proved to be a disc-shaped appearance, like the planet Saturn with its rings. An officer urged the photographer Almiro Baraúna, which was attached to the scientific expedition to photograph the object; Baraúna ran to get my camera and took six photographs. The sighting lasted less than 40 seconds.
When the UFO disappeared, the captain asked if he could develop quickly Baraúna the film, the photographer did it with makeshift equipment, assisted by some officers who attended to the development. The examination of the negatives revealed that the UFO had been recovered only in the first three photos. The captain asked Baraúna not show the photos to anyone without the permission of the Navy. Baraúna agreed, but he kept with him the negatives, which later gave rise to suspicion.
The ship departed and 21 January he returned to Rio de Janeiro. Two days after his return, an officer came by and asked Baraúna negatives on behalf of the Navy. Baraúna them delivered and were returned after a couple of days, with the thanks of the Navy.
Some Brazilian newspapers recounted the incident, the Navy Ministry, while confirming the sighting, declared he was not able to specify the nature of the object. On February 25 the same Ministry issued a statement in which he stated that the UFO pictures were to be considered authentic.
